If you need an extension of time to file your federal return, chances are you will also need an extension of time to file your state return.
Individual states have different rules for granting extensions. For example, some states require you to file a separate state extension form, while other states grant you an automatic state extension without even having to file a form.
After you complete and file your federal extension, you can complete and file your state extension.
Once you successfully complete the federal extension error check process, click Next.
On the Your State Extension screen, select your state from the list and click Next. The extension requirements for your state are displayed.
Read the instructions carefully and click Next.
Finish filing your federal extension.
Once you complete filing your federal extension, if your state does not require you to file an extension form you are done. If your state requires you to file an extension form, use the Take Me To dialog box to go to the state Interview and complete a state extension.
