You must sign your tax return using the IRS's Self-Select Personal Identification Number (PIN) program. When you use this program to sign your return, you simply select a PIN number and enter your prior year's Adjusted Gross Income and/or your prior year’s PIN. You don't have to mail a signature form or any attachment (like W-2's and 1099's) to the IRS.
If you imported information from your prior year return, your prior year's Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) and prior year PIN if applicable, is automatically filled in for you. If you did not import information from your prior year return, you must enter your prior year's AGI. Click here to find out where you can get this information.
Note: If both your prior year AGI amount and your prior year PIN don't match, the IRS will reject your return. However, if one of the two, either your prior year AGI or your prior year PIN, is correct, the IRS will accept your return.
You have a foreign address, except for APO/FPO addresses.
You are an alien with a Social Security Number not valid for employment.
Note: Even though you are filing your return electronically, you may still have to mail some documentation to the IRS, along with a Form 8453 US INDIVIDUAL INCOME TAX TRANSMITTAL FOR AN IRS E-FILE RETURN (But note that Form 8453 is only a transmittal sheet for your paper documents, it does not have the effect of signing your return). If you are paying your taxes by check you must complete a payment voucher form. At the end of the e-filing process, the program displays a Filing Checklist which will list the address where you mail the Payment Voucher with your check.
