Finding a Form

When you are working in Forms Central, the H&R Block software allows you to search for a specific form.

You can also use the program's Shoebox feature to find the appropriate tax form or worksheet for each piece of tax information that you want to enter as part of your tax return. The Shoebox tells you where the information belongs and can take you directly to the line in the form.

To search for a form while in Forms Central:

  1. Click the Search button in the lower right hand corner of the Forms Central window.  The program opens the Search window.

  2. In the Search for text box, enter the number/name of the form or schedule you are looking for. The program displays a list of associated subtopics and their location (For example; Interview, Forms, Explanations of Forms, Using the H&R Block Tax Software) in the Search Results list box.

  3. Highlight the Form entry and click the Go There button.

  4. The program closes the Search window and displays the form you selected in Forms Central.

Note: You cannot view any other areas of help (Interview, Using the H&R Block Tax Software, etc.) related to your form entry while searching from the Forms Central window. If you choose one of these other areas, the program will prompt you to close the Forms Central window first.

To find the right form for a piece of information using the Shoebox:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Shoebox . The Shoebox dialog opens.

  2. In the first list (Document Received from), select the source of the document.

  3. In the second list (For), select a document or type of information.

In a few cases, the program displays more choices in the third list box to clarify which document you have.

For example, if you select "Receipts or checkbook" as the source, and "Meals and entertainment" as the information, the program still has to find out whether the receipt applies to you as an employee, the owner of a business, a farmer, or a landlord.

  4. If entries appear in the third list (To you), select the appropriate entry for your situation. Otherwise, at the bottom of the dialog box, Shoebox tells you on what federal form and line you should enter this item.

  5. Click the Go There button to jump to the appropriate federal form and line.

Note: You cannot open the Shoebox when the Forms Central window is open.
