Working in the Interview

The H&R Block tax software main window is divided into two sections; the main Interview pane and the FAQ pane located to the right of the Interview pane.

As you complete your federal and state returns, the program's Interview takes you through each possible question and offers you the maximum assistance. As you move through the Interview, you'll be answering different types of Interview questions.

The program's FAQs provide answers to commonly asked questions related to the Interview topic you are working on. Simply click the FAQ and the Help Central window opens with an answer to the question.

Filling In Entry Fields

If the question asks you to enter information in one or more fields, type your response in the entry field or fields and then click Next. You can use the Tab key to tab from one field to the next.

If you imported data from last year or from a financial program, some fields in the Interview window might be filled in for you already. Imported information from your last year's return is shown as brown colored text. You can accept the imported information by selecting the Next button, or you can type new information in the fields, and then click Next to continue.

Selecting an Option

If the question asks you to choose an option, for example yes or no, select the option and then click Next.

Clicking on Check Boxes and Radio Buttons

When you begin a topic in the Interview, you maybe asked to choose the sections in that topic that you would like to complete, for example, the types of income you received. Simply click on the check boxes next to the appropriate items and then click Next. The program takes you only to the sections you selected. Or, you maybe asked to choose a single item from a list, for example your Filing Status. Click on the radio button next to the item that applies to you and then click Next.

Going to the Previous or Next Question

You can go backwards and forwards through the questions by clicking the Back and Next buttons.

Skipping Questions

In some Interview topics you can skip a question by clicking the Skip button. At the end of each Interview section, the program will notify you as to which topics you skipped in case you need to go back and complete them.

Reading Information

Some Interview items are informational and do not request an entry from you. You should read the text carefully, and then click Next to go on to the next question.
