If you have installed H&R Block's state program for your state, you use the State tab to prepare your state tax return.
Since this program automatically transfers all applicable information from your federal return to your state return, you must complete your federal return before preparing your state return.
We recommend preparing your state return before filing your federal return because it may remind you to add something to your federal taxes. Also, some states require you to e-file your state and federal returns together.
See Getting Your State Program for more details on how to get or purchase an H&R Block state program.
