Troubleshooting: Interview

If you don't find what you are looking for in the H&R Block software's troubleshooting information, or you need more help, check our Online Customer Support services.

Navigation

I've started the Interview, but I cannot move around because I don't see any buttons that let me move from one window to the next.

Problems viewing the whole window such as missing buttons, toolbar, and scroll bar usually mean that your screen resolution settings are too low. In order to fix the problem, you need to adjust this setting:

  1. On the Taskbar, click the Start button, point to Settings, and then select Control Panel.

  2. In the Control Panel, double-click the Display icon.

  3. Click on the Settings tab.

  4. Slide the arrow for Screen Area to the right until it shows 800 x 600 or a higher resolution.

  5. Click the Apply button.

  6. Click OK.

I'm in an Interview topic, but I cannot move forward in the Interview because I don't see the Next button.

Some of our Interview screens include more in-depth assistance or ask more questions about a particular topic. These Interview topics include a scroll-bar that you can use prior to clicking Next to proceed. It is located between the FAQ pane on the right-hand side of the window and the main Interview pane.

  1. Slide the scroll-bar down after reading your options and selecting all applicable items. The Next button is at the bottom.

  2. Click Next to proceed through the Interview.

I've just completed the Interview process and forgot to include some information. Now what do I do?

If you miss a step during the Interview process, you can easily go back to that part of the Interview using the Take Me To dialog box:

  1. Click the Take Me To arrow.

  2. When the Take Me To dialog box opens, scroll through the list of topics to find the part of the Interview that you missed.

  3. Highlight the topic name in the topics list.

  4. Click the Go To button.

I'm working in the Interview. How do I enter a second W-2 form?

When you are completing a topic in the federal or state Interview that relates to a form that can have multiple copies, the program automatically displays a box that lists the copies by number (for example, 1st, 2nd, etc.).

Note: If the program does not display a copy list box, you cannot make another copy of the form.

To create a new copy:

Entering Data

Some fields aren't long enough for all the data I need to enter. What should I do?

Some fields in the program may not accept all of the numerals or letters you need to enter. For example: you won't be able to enter all of the letters for a long first name, such as Christopher, in the name field on the federal Dependents' Worksheet; you may not be able to enter the entire Control Number on the W-2 Worksheet; and you may not be able to enter the letters in the field for Federal Employer ID Number on the W-2 Worksheet.

Enter as many numerals or letters as you can. You don't need to make the entire entry since it will be enough information for the IRS' or state's purpose.

The IRS or state instructions tell me to enter text on a line. But the program won't accept text here, only numbers. What should I do?

Print your return and write the necessary information by hand on the required line. Handwritten entries on your return exclude you from filing an electronic return, so you will need to submit a paper return on standard forms.

When I enter a date, such as date of birth, date of purchase, sales date, etc., the program doesn't accept it. What am I doing wrong?

The program requires you to enter dates in the format of mm/dd/yyyy, for example, 07/24/1957. If you enter only two numbers for the year, for example 57, the program will not accept it.

Returns

I want to start over and create a new blank return. How do I get out of the current return and create a new one?

The H&R Block software allows you to create as many returns as you need. All you need to do is remember the file name of the returns you want to work with.

To create a new tax return:

  1. From the File menu, choose Create New Return.

Note: If you have made any changes to the current tax return, the program asks if you want to save the changes to the current file before you open a new file. Click Yes to save the changes, click No to discard the changes, or click Cancel to continue working on the current return.

  1. Click the Start a Return button.

  2. On the Smart Import screen click Skip Import.

  3. You can begin entering data on the Get Ready: Personal Information screen.

  4. To save the new file, choose Save from the File menu.

  5. Type a name for the return, and click the Save button.

IRS

What are IRS activity codes?

The IRS publishes 6-digit activity codes that identify the type of business for Schedule C (Form 1040) and Schedule F (Form 1040). For a list of codes, see IRS instructions for Schedule C or Schedule F.
