Troubleshooting: General

If you don't find what you are looking for in the H&R Block software's troubleshooting information, or you need more help, check our Online Customer Support services.

Internet Connection

Why can't I connect to the H&R Block Web site?

There could be several reasons for not being able to connect to the Internet site. Check these items and retry connecting.

All products, brands, or services are trademarks of their respective manufacturers.

Why does it take so long to display an IRS publication?

The IRS publications are not loaded onto your computer's hard drive with the rest of the application. They are stored on the web site because they take up a large amount of disk space. When you select a publication to be viewed, it takes a moment for your computer to access the web site, locate the publication, and then display it.

Window Display Issues

I'm in an Interview topic, but I cannot move forward in the Interview because I don't see the Next button.

Some of our Interview screens include more in-depth assistance or ask more questions about a particular topic. These Interview topics include a scroll-bar that you can use prior to clicking Next to proceed. It is located between the FAQ pane on the right-hand side of the window and the main Interview pane.

  1. Slide the scroll-bar down after reading your options and selecting all applicable items. The Next button is at the bottom.

  2. Click Next to proceed through the Interview.

Even though I've installed my state program,  a state tab is not displayed on the Forms Central, Error Check, or Reports window?

H&R Block software does not display a state tab (for example, New York) on these windows until you actually open and start a tax return for the state.

Why can't I read all the text on the Help Central window?

This may happen when viewing tables in a Help topic. If you cannot view the complete text of a table, try resizing the Help Central window.

I changed my screen resolution settings and now the H&R Block program main window is scrambled.

Close the H&R Block tax software and all other applications that are running on your computer. Shut down your system and restart it. When you open the tax software again, do not change the screen resolution settings. The program has default resolution settings that shouldn't be changed.

Why can't I read the text on the H&R Block program windows?

You may have changed your Windows default color scheme causing the text and background to become the same color; this makes the text illegible.

To restore the Windows default color scheme:

  1. On the Taskbar, click the Start button, point to Settings, and then select Control Panel.

  2. In the Control Panel, double-click the Display icon.

  3. Click the Appearance tab.

  4. Under Scheme, select Windows Standard.

  5. Click OK.

Backups

What can I do if I accidentally delete my data file?

We recommend that you periodically make a backup of your tax return files so that you can restore the file, if necessary.

To backup your current tax return file:

  1. From the File menu, select Backup Tax Return. The program displays the Backup As dialog box.

  2. Enter the name of the backup file in the Name field or accept the default name displayed.

You can back up to the default drive specified, or click the Browse button to save the file to a different location.

  1. Click OK.

To restore backed up files, copy the files from the backup area to the My Documents/HRBlock folder on your hard drive.

Note: Make sure you don't overwrite any tax return files that you may already have in this folder.

Uninstalling

How do I remove last year's tax software from my hard drive?

First, back up your 2009 tax data:

  1. Insert a blank disk in your computer's removable disk drive.

  2. From Windows Explorer, locate and select the tax return file or files you want to backup.  2009 tax return files are stored with a .T09 extension.

  3. Drag the files to the removable drive icon.

Now you are ready to uninstall the program.

  1. On the Windows Taskbar, click Start, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In the Control Panel, double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon. Note: This icon is called Programs and Settings in Windows Vista.

  3. Scroll through the list, and select the TaxCut 2009 program by clicking on it.

  4. Click Remove (Uninstall in Windows Vista).
