Filing an Extension Electronically

Electronic filing allows you to send your extension as a specially formatted electronic data file to the IRS. Everything you need to prepare and file an electronic extension is included in the H&R Block tax software.

The program checks your extension to make sure it qualifies for electronic filing. To review these qualifications, see Electronic Filing Rules for Extensions.

After you transmit your extension, you can check the status of your extension within 24 hours. We will send you an acknowledgment that your extension was received and tell you if it was accepted or rejected by the IRS. We will also send you a Declaration Control Number (DCN) to keep with your records.

Note: You must check the status of your federal extension, before you can e-file your federal return.

Extension E-Filing Deadline

You can e-file your extension with H&R Block from January 10, 2010 through April 18, 2010.  When you file for an extension, the IRS gives you until October 15th to file your actual tax return.

Extension E-Filing Payment Options

There are two payment options when you choose to e-file your extension.

If you e-file your extension and you are sending a payment, you can now have your tax payment automatically withdrawn from your bank account on a date you choose, allowing you to file your extension early, but pay the tax due later. This year, you can select a payment date as late as April 18th.

If you choose the Electronic Funds Withdrawal option, the program collects the necessary bank account and payment authorization information and transmits it along with your extension.

You will also need to electronically sign your extension. To create an electronic signature, you will be required to enter your adjusted gross income from your last year's return, and then create any five-digit PIN. The program helps you enter this information when it's time.

Note: In case the requested payment cannot be processed for any reason (such as insufficient funds or invalid bank account information), you will be mailed a notice with instructions for paying by check. This year, the check must be postmarked no later than April 18th to be considered timely payment of your taxes.

When you pay by check, you simply mail your extension payment to the appropriate IRS Service Center. Be sure to include the taxpayers' name, address, Social Security number, daytime telephone number and "2010 Form 4868" on your check. Click here to see a list of IRS Mailing Addresses.
