One of the most common problems that delays the IRS or state from processing returns is an incorrect social security number. The number on the return may be different from the one the Social Security Administration has on file for the taxpayer. This often happens as a result of a name change due to marriage. Also, the social security number is no longer on the mailing label if you have a tax booklet. You may want to contact the Social Security Administration to verify your number.
