If e-filing is available in your state program, then you can e-file both your federal and state tax returns.
Some states require you to e-file your federal and state returns at the same time, while other states allow you to e-file them together or separately. Click here to view a list of states that require you to file jointly and a list of states that allow you to file them separately.
Although the H&R Block software allows you to electronically file your state return and federal return separately, we recommend that you e-file them at the same time. If you choose to e-file them separately, you will have to wait two or three days for an IRS acknowledgment of your federal return, before you can e-file your state return.
