Using State Programs

You create a state return by opening your federal return, clicking on the State tab and opening your state program. H&R Block State programs:

Since this program automatically transfers information from your federal return to your state return, you must complete your federal return before preparing your state return.

We recommend preparing your state return before filing your federal return because it may remind you to add something to your federal taxes. Also, some states require you to e-file your state and federal returns together.

All H&R Block State programs include additional state-specific advice related to the state’s individual tax laws.

If you have already installed your state program:

  1. Click the State tab.

  2. Double-click on the state name from the list, or select it and click Begin.

  3. Answer the questions to move through the state Interview topics.
