Getting Started, Rules and Regs

The objective of the Spec RX-7 is to provide an affordable regional class that emphasises driver skill rather than the ability to outspend the competition, or to find that secret magic setup. The Spec RX-7 class is a series that avoids the increasing cost and constant change found in Improved Touring. The class will be kept simple and efficient, and will avoid special skill requirements such as fabrication. Basically, you take a stock 1981-1985 RX-7 (not a GSL-SE), add required safety equipment (upgraded brake pads fall under safety equipment in my book!), make sure everything is tight, and go. You may add on such things as specific springs and shocks, wider wheels, driver seat etc., but the car remains VERY stock. And don't forget the personal safety gear that is also required: helmet, suit, socks, shoes, etc.

There were nearly 378,000 first generation RX-7s produced. This translates into a large supply of inexpensive used sports cars and plenty of spare parts. The RX-7 12A rotary engine is reliable and begins to hit its stride at 100,000 miles. The chassis is simple and durable, with an independant front suspension and a live rear axle. This foundation means these cars can be made competitive for the race track with relative ease.

Central Division SCCA uses the SoPac rule set listed below.

  • 2004 SoPac Rules (HTML)
  •   From the Rocky Mountain site
  • Jeff Cashmore's Spec RX-7 page
  •   Jeff was instrumental in bringing Spec RX-7 to the Milwaukee Region SCCA. His page is a great intro to Spec RX-7, what it is, how to get started, what to expect, who to contact, and more (like some cool videos). I have included below updates to some of his older links, but he's got it all spelled out very well.
  • MARRS Spec RX-7 site
  •   East coast group with a mature program, lots of drivers, good info and some humor.
  • Rocky Mountain Region
  •   Another good-sized group.
  • SCCA National site
  •   Learn about the SCCA it's programs, licensing requirements, etc.
  • Milwaukee Region SCCA site
  •   Find out what's going on in the Milwaukee region.
  • Midwestern Council
