If you need more time to complete your federal tax return, you can file an extension. Filing an extension gives you until October 17th to complete and file your federal tax return.
Similar to completing your federal return, the H&R Block software walks you through the process of completing the paperwork necessary to file an extension. You simply answer the questions on the Federal Extension Interview screens and the appropriate forms are filled out for you.
There are two methods for completing an extension:
Do a Quick Extension
Use this method if you want to quickly figure the amount of estimated tax you owe with your extension. This is a good option if you don't have a lot of time and can easily figure the amount of tax you owe. Only minimal information will be carried to your federal return.
Go Through Federal Interview to Complete Extension
Use this method to enter all the tax information you have available through the federal Interview. This is a good option if you have more time and you want the program to use the information you enter to estimate the amount of tax you owe. Another advantage of this method is that much of your tax information will have already been entered in your federal return when the time comes to complete it.
Whichever method you choose, when you are finished, the H&R Block software takes you to the file tab to help you file your extension. You can e-file your extension or print and mail a paper form.
Note: This is an extension of time to file only. The IRS still expects you to estimate and pay any taxes you owe with your extension by April 18th.
